Brunswick

Brunswick, which includes Brunswick East and West, occupies the southernmost part of the City of Moreland. At just 6 km from the CBD, Brunswick is one of Melbourne’s oldest suburbs and contains a huge number of heritage listed houses, as well as other buildings of historical significance. Growth over the last decade has resulted in many new apartment and townhouse developments, which provides an appealing mix to the overall look and feel of the area. This multicultural hub has a population of over 20,000 people.

Notable areas in Brunswick are Sydney Road and Lygon Street. Sydney Road has many supermarkets, delis and eateries from a variety of cultures, as well as historical pubs and hotels. The annual Sydney Road Street Party is held in February as a precursor to the Brunswick Music Festival in March that features blues, roots and world music. Lygon Street has many famous restaurants and cafes and the Barkly Square Shopping centre.

CERES Community Environment Park situated on the banks of Merri Creek in Brunswick East is  one of Australia's most visited environmental education centres  This unique four hectare park is dedicated to community environmental education and research.

There are many sporting facilities throughout Brunswick, and sporting activity is focused around Clifton and Gilpin Park as well as the Gillon Oval. Brunswick is very flat and ideal for cycling, and the leafy streets and abundant bike paths make pedal-pushing enjoyable. There are several primary and secondary schools in the area from all denominations, and easy access to RMIT and the University of Melbourne. The Jewell, Brunswick and Anstey railway stations as well as several bus and tram routes go through Brunswick, making it one of the most accessible suburbs in Melbourne.
